Background music - Although background music was by the end of the 20th Century generally identified with Muzak or Elevator music there are several stages in the development of this concept:
Furniture music - Furniture music, or in French musique d’ameublement (sometimes more literally translated as furnishing music), is background music originally played by live performers. The term was coined by Erik Satie, apparently in 1917, that is a few years before muzak was invented - this term rather indicating background music from recorded resources.
Production music - Production music is background music used for many media sources, such as television and radio advertisements. They are presented as a less expensive option than commissioning a composer for custom music or paying for the rights to use commercial music, as some organizations may find the cost for either one of the latter two options prohibitive (or at least uneconomical).
Final Fantasy music - Final Fantasy Music refers to the soundtrack of a series of console-based, usually plot-intensive Japanese electronic role playing games. The series' music spans from very light background music to emotionally intense interweavings of character and situation leitmotifs.
